Web publishers have had a tough time with all the Panda and Penguin updates and the attendant penalties. Much has been said about how people are recovering from Google’s algorithm changes and updates. Here is the synopsis of what experts are talking about when recovering from these updates.

Panda updates

Google’s Panda update hit many sites. The chief motive of Google was to remove duplicate or stale content. However, if a website has content regarding coffee making, how much new content can you add. Having said this, it is time website owners/managers take stock of what kind of content is being added to their websites. Add value by incorporating something new and relevant. Poor quality content is going to be punished by Google. For big businesses like Amazon this does not really matter. They don’t need in-depth content on their sites.

So, how do you decide that your website is poor quality?

Include 301 redirects on your pages that have poor quality content. Use noindex on pages or rewrite the pages. If possible add more supporting content on other pages.

Get rid of sneaky redirects on your website. This generally happens when you inherit a website. Use Google Webmaster tools to find and examine the code of such pages.

Get rid of hidden texts and keyword stuffing as they may result in manual penalties. After you have done this inform Google that you have made the necessary changes. Another reason for manual action on the part of Google is thin content, auto generated, content or scrapped content. Rectify this as soon as you can. Clean up irrelevant comments on your website. The best way to discourage spam comments is by using CAPTCHA.

Another issue that makes Google mad is unnatural or bad links intended for page rank. Stop buying and selling links. Google has made it clear that any website with links they think are intended to influence page rank are going to be penalized. To build links start guest posts on sites that are related to your business/industry.

Infographics has also been abused a lot. Make sure infographics on your site are high quality and have factual information.

Press releases should also be moderated. Avoid stuffing keywords in press releases or embedding links in them.

How to recover from link penalties?

  • Make a list of all the links using tools like Bing Webmasters tools or Google Webmaster tool
  • Classify and categorize all your links
  • Check if the links are good or bad for you
  • Collect all possible contact information via email, social, or snail mail
  • Get in touch with other webmasters, however, don’t blame them for the penalties imposed on you

Even after doing all this you still have bad links then use the Google Disavow tool and disavow all the bad links. Before submitting a reconsideration request to Google make sure all your paperwork is right and your website is clean. In the communication to Google you may mention the reasons why you had all those bad links. Promise Google that you will be careful and reiterate that such a thing won’t ever happen again.

Follow these simple steps and you are good to go.
